This year I hopped onto one of the hottest trends. I got an iPhone and swiftly fell into the world of podcasts. I’m honestly terrible at finding new music for myself to listen to – I like what I like, why would I want to change? – and so, when I get tired of listening to my music, I really like to listen to someone else speak on a variety of things – Faith, love, life, etc.
The Next Right Thing
One of the most amazing podcasts I listen to, I recommend to everyone! The Next Right Thing is a podcast for people who are terrible at making decisions. When I was trying to figure out where I wanted to go for college, this podcast was my saving grace. Not to mention the fact that Emily P. Freeman has the most soothing voice.
Get rid of the clutter in your life. When you’re trying to make decisions, you often have other people’s voices in your head and random pieces of information taking up space in your head. Clean your environment, have some alone time, and brain dump all the information in your head.
Ask yourself “Am I making this decision out of fear or out of love?” The motivation behind your decision is a pretty good indicator on how you feel. For example, you get an internship offer in a different city. You say “No” and after some soul-searching, you find you were afraid of making new friends. It could also be that you were in love with another job prospect. Asking yourself this question can help you evaluate and validate your reasoning behind a decision.
Create a list – not pro/con but life giving/life draining. This list shouldn’t be your only way of determining your decision, however, a life giving/life draining list will tell you how certain things make you feel and help you figure out what you are willing to allow in your future.
The Gathering is a Christian ministry based out of Cleveland, Tennessee. Pastor Noah Herrin preaches to young adults, mostly students from Lee University. This is my favorite podcast. I love listening every Friday when it comes out.
Let Me Love You is a message that is especially relevant – how to determine lust vs. love.
Based on 1 Corinthians 13 –
Love vs. Lust is simple
Lust says “What can you do for me?” Love says “What can I do for you?”
Lust says “Let me satisfy me.” Love says “Let me serve you.”
Love is a decision, a choice. Choose your convictions over convenience. Choose commitment over chemistry. Choose faith over feelings.
In today’s dating culture, we are looking for the one. Instead prepare on being the one – developing the qualities you want in someone else.
The Art of Manliness
Despite what this might seem, the Art of Manliness is relevant for females as well. The Art of Manliness is a website that is now accompanied by a podcasts, with different topics on creativity, having the best day, routines, etc.
Despite the fact that we seem to be in a time period where sex is most favorably looked upon, there appears to be a recession.
Some reasons cited were
- Lack of intimacy – we are connecting less with each other
- Less secretive = less attractive
- Economy – more people are living at home with their parents
Questions help you with decisions and self-reflections.
These are some questions to ask yourself:
- What scares me? What excites me?
- What would I try to do if couldn’t fail?
- If a friend came to you, what would you tell them?
- What are the ways I seem to be creative?
- What stirs or bugs me?
WHOA That’s Good
This podcast is hosted by Sadie Robertson and she asks inspirational people one question – “What’s the best advice you’ve been given?”
Here are some of their answers:
- Think of 10 year self and 28 year old self when making decisions.
- Know your why.
- Your actions and words must sync up.
- It isn’t meant for you if you didn’t get it.
- Look at the world and see your frustrations – that can be your act of service.
Podcasts are for information, for entertainment, for becoming a better person. I’ve really loved learning and broadening my mind about subjects I love and subjects I’ve never thought of. I’m always looking for more podcasts to listen to.
